Programme of Celebration Events

 

19 August

This year we have the special opportunity to start preparations for the celebration on 19 August!

 

10.00–24.00 ‘The Avenue of Hungarian Flavours’ on the Danube embankment

Visitors can sample quality Hungarian produce, traditional national food and drink, and the official wines of the Hungarian Presidency in a two-day fair.

20.00–24.00 Open-air concerts and street dance

Large-scale concerts with a host of performers open to all on the eve of the national holiday

Venues: Bem tér, Clark Ádám tér and Vigadó tér

16.00 Honours ceremony in the Central Domed Hall of the Parliament Building

State honours will be awarded by President of the Republic of Hungary Pál Schmitt. The event will be broadcast online by Hungarian State Television.

18.00 The Minorities’ Award Ceremony in the Delegation Hall of the Parliament Building

The prize will be awarded by Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán. The event will be broadcast online by Hungarian State Television.

 

20 August


8.00 Ceremonial raising of the national flag in Kossuth tér

Taking part in the ceremony will be the National Mounted Guard of Honour of the Hungarian Republic, the Budapest Military Garrison and the Central Band of the Hungarian National Defence Forces’ Auxiliary Brigade.

10.00 Officers’ passing out ceremony in Heroes’ Square

Preceding the ceremony, majorettes, participants in historical costume and military bands will parade along Andrássy út. President of the Republic of Hungary Pál Schmitt and Minister of Defence Csaba Hende will give ceremonial addresses at the event.

9.00–18.00 Open day in Parliament

The Parliament Building will open its doors to the public on our national day. Everyone will be able to visit free of charge, without prior registration.

10.00–22.00 ‘The Avenue of Hungarian Flavours’ on the Danube embankment

Visitors can sample quality Hungarian produce, traditional national food and drink, and the official wines of the Hungarian Presidency in a two-day fair.

10.00–18.00 Family events on the Danube embankment

Dance performances, puppet shows and concerts for all in Clark Ádám tér and Vigadó tér.

14.00–15.30 Historical carnival and water and air parade on the Danube

Following the air parade there will be a procession of boats representing different historical periods, which can be viewed from the banks of the Danube. President of the Republic of Hungary Pál Schmitt will address those assembled from the Danube Steps of the Parliament Building.

15.30 Ecumenical service for the Blessing of Bread in Clark Ádám tér

Gábor Tamás Nagy, Mayor of District I, will give a speech.

16.00 Harvest Procession sets off from Clark Ádám tér

Children in traditional dress, master bakers, dancers and musicians will walk together in procession. Anybody can join the procession.

17.00 St. Stephen’s Day Celebration Mass

The Liturgy in St. Stephen’s Basilica will be led by Cardinal Péter Erdő, Primate of Hungary, Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest and President of the Hungarian Catholic Bishops' Conference

18.00 Procession of the Holy Right

The route of the procession will be from Szent István tér along Október 6. utca, József Attila utca, Széchényi tér, Zrínyi utca and back to Szent István tér and the Basilica.

19.00 Participants in the Határon Túra (‘Tour across the Border’) are welcomed at Parliament

At 19.00 participants of the cycle tour will be addressed in Kossuth tér. The Hot Jazz Band will perform at the event.

19.00 ‘Chain of Requests’ on the Danube embankments

Live music request show on the embankments staged by Lánchíd Radio.

21.00 Festive firework displays on the Danube embankment in Budapest, in Baja and in Debrecen
